Beloved 86-year-old Bakery in NJ Closing — ‘The time has come to say goodbye’
The year was 1939. World War II started, the Manhattan Project was established, television was introduced to the American public, and "Gone With the Wind" premiered.
And a little bakery in South Jersey opened.
86 years later, that shop, which has become known for absolutely amazing cream doughnuts (among other things) is about to close for good.
What People are Saying About the Bakery
Let's first paint a picture of what people have to say about this bakery:
McMillan's Bakery in Haddon Twp. Closing
We're talking about McMillan's Bakery on Haddon Avenue in Haddon Township, Camden County.
And, yes, it's kinda funny that the Google Maps car caught a guy in front of the store carrying boxes of goodies...
Not Selling the Business
The McMillan family took to Facebook Friday and they posted this message, which might just bring a tear to your eye:
The time has come to say goodbye. We have worked hard to continue serving our beloved community for as long as possible, but as they say, 'all good things must come to an end.' We’ve had many offers to buy our beloved business, but our Matriarch insisted that our family business end with our family. She was clear that she did not want our name or our legacy to be carried on by anyone outside our fourth-generation family. And so, we are honoring her wishes and closing our doors after 86 wonderful years in business. Our building might still stand, but the McMillan's legacy has come to an end.
A Legacy of Cream Doughnuts and Community
Within the past couple of weeks, we created a list of the best bakeries over in Philadelphia and as we were doing so, we couldn't help but think of the sensory overload that you experience when you walk into a mom-and-pop bakery. We said,
Dreams are made of a 1,000-calorie cream-filled donut or a cannoli that rivals anything you can get in Italy.
Ironically, McMillan's was known for those cream-filled doughnuts. And when you had one in front of you, literally exploding with cream, you didn't really care about the calorie count.
And as we've said before, this is one of those places that's just always been there. And when businesses like this fade into history, it hurts. A piece of the Garden State is going away, likely to never be duplicated.
Last Chance to Visit
McMillan's will be serving their treats until their doors close for good this Sunday.
They say, "We hope to see you one last time..."
