New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin has awarded Atlantic City Police Department Sergeant Brian Shapiro with the Outstanding Community Partnership Award at the 2023 Excellence in Policing Ceremony.

The award is for outreach in helping Atlantic City’s at-risk population.

In attendance supporting Shapiro were:

  • Will Reynolds, Atlantic County Prosecutor
  • Jim Sarkos, Atlantic City Chief of Police
  • Patrick Snyder, Chief of Detectives, ACPO
  • Erik Bergman, First Assistant Prosecutor, ACPO.
  • Bridget Pierce, Atlantic City Deputy Chief of Police.

Sarkos said the following:

“I am extremely proud of the work Sgt. Shapiro and the Atlantic City Police Department are providing to the At Risk Population. This initiative is successful because of the various public and private stake holders working together.

Thank you to the New Jersey Attorney General's Office for recognizing the work of Sgt. Shapiro and the Atlantic City Police Department,” said Sarkos.

Reynolds added:

“Sergeant Brian Shapiro won the honor and distinction as 1 of 6 honorees in the entire state of New Jersey for his innovative work with the at risk initiative,” said Reynolds.

”This honor was so well deserved and we are all so appreciative of the work done by Sergeant Shapiro, Rick McKelvey - the Executive Assistant Prosecutor and Michael Kane of Caesar's and so many others being a community of interest,” said Reynolds.

Sergeant Shapiro coordinates weekly At Risk Initiative meetings with casino, business and law enforcement officials to better address outreach toward people in need.

Attorney General Platkin said:

"Today, I am honored to present awards for Excellence in Policing to the dedicated public servants and agencies who work tirelessly to strengthen our communities by implementing innovative, creative and unique programs or by demonstrating particularly heroic actions,” said Platkin said in a statement.

"These recipients represent the very, very best of New Jersey law enforcement. Thanks to their efforts, we can better serve our fellow residents and, in turn, not only make New Jersey safer, but truly stronger,” said Platkin.
