MONTVILLE — This township police officer went from hauling in misbehaved drunks to allegedly drinking on the job himself.

Officer Kurt Geisinger was charged Friday with drunk driving and careless driving.

More troubling, prosecutors said, was that Geisinger was behind the wheel of an unmarked police car — and on duty.

He has been suspended from the force, but will continue to collect his $124,100 annual base salary as the investigation continues. The motor vehicle charges against Geisinger will be heard in Municipal Court.

The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said Saturday that the cop was not involved in any accident and that there “is no indication that the officer had any interaction with the public while intoxicated.”

Prosecutors did not release other details. Geisinger could not immediately be reached for comment Saturday morning and it was not clear whether he had an attorney.

The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office does not release arrest booking photos of suspects.

Geisinger is the latest police officer in the state to face alcohol-related charges.

Elsewhere in Morris County, Washington Township Police Officer William F. McCarthy III was charged with with a slew of offenses after slamming his SUV into several parked cars in Pennsylvania in June. His license had been suspended for three months last year after another incident.

Last month, retired Scotch Plains police chief Brian Mahoney was slapped with a DWI charge after his car hit a utility pole.

And this week, Burlington Township Police Officer Justin Rodriguez was charged with killing a woman who was a passenger in his car while he drove drunk on Sept. 23.
