One ACPD Cop Arrests Three, Recovers Guns and Drugs
One officer with the Atlantic City Police Department was quite busy Sunday -- he arrested three men, including one for attempted murder, and recovered drugs and two guns.
Authorities say Ofc. Aaron Jones started his shift around 6:30 Sunday evening and he spotted 32-year-old Randy Acosta of Philadelphia near Texas and Pacific Avenues. Acosta was wanted for his involvement in two shootings where he was charged with attempted murder and other related crimes. Cops say Acosta was taken into custody without incident and found to be in possession of 14 grams of marijuana.
Acosta’s charges stemmed from investigations conducted by the Violent Crimes Unit following two separate shootings that occurred on August 24 and 26 where a man was wounded in each.
Later in his shift, the same officer conducted a traffic stop at North Carolina and Mediterranean Avenues. The driver, identified as 23-year-old Dionisio Torres of Atlantic City, did not have a valid driver’s license and the vehicle smelled of unburnt marijuana, according to police. Torres and his passenger, 27-year-old Winerd Prevard of Atlantic City, exited the vehicle. Prevard was arrested after being found in possession of two loaded handguns, both of which were reported stolen from Franklin Township, NJ. Torres was arrested after he was found in possession of 200 bags of heroin and a small amount of marijuana.
Acosta has been charged with two counts each of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and single counts of attempted murder, conspiracy, and possession of CDS; he was remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
Prevard was charged with two counts each of unlawful possession of a weapon, receiving stolen property, and certain person not to possess a weapon; he was also remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
Torres was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS) and single counts of possession with intent to distribute CDS, possession with intent to distribute CDS within 500 feet of a public zone, possession with intent to distribute CDS within 1,000 feet of a school zone, and motor vehicle summons; he was released on a summons with a future court date.
