A fatal accident on Route 55 involving at least two vehicles closed down a section of Route 55 to start Friday morning's commute.

New Jersey State Police spokesman Sgt, Gregory Williams said a car went off the ramp from the southbound 42 Freeway onto southbound Route 55 and hit a tree. The driver got out of the car to assess the damage and was struck and killed by a second vehicle around 5:40 a.m.

Williams said mid-Friday morning the accident investigation unit was on location and has not determined if the rain played a role in the accident.

The ramp from the 42 Freeway remained closed as of 8 a.m., causing a multi-mile delay that started at Interstate 295.

"If you stick with 42 for just one more exit you can get off at Clements Bridge Road and head towards the Deptford Mall. Take a left onto Almonesson Road and that will get you back on Route 55," said Townsquare Media's Jill Myra.
