They say that driving a vehicle with a manual transmission has become a lost art. It is certainly a skill that three accused South Jersey carjackers never learned.

Pleasantville Police issued a statement Tuesday about the arrest of two city teenagers and one from Atlantic City who they say attempted to steal a delivery driver's car, only to realize that the vehicle had a manual shift and none of them knew how to operate it.

Police were called to the scene of a carjacking of a food delivery vehicle around 8 pm Monday at 305 West Washington Avenue.

When the driver left his car running when he got out to make a delivery, three 15-year-olds apparently decided to steal the man's vehicle.

Police say that one teen got in on the driver's side of the 2006 Honda Civic and a second teen entered on the passenger side. That's when the stick shift-less teens realized they had no idea how to drive that car.

By then, the delivery driver was on his way back to his car.

The teens exited the car and with help from a third teen, police say they began to beat up the man, with the three taking turns punching and kicking him while he was on the ground.

Police arrived and arrested the teens on charges of carjacking, aggravated assault, and conspiracy to commit those crimes.

The teens are being held at the Harborfields Detention Center in Egg Harbor City.
