Popular South Jersey jeweler to close Cape May, NJ, store

A popular Cape May jeweler has announced it plans to close its store at the end of the summer season.

Henry's Landmark Jewelers has been a fixture on the Washington Street Mall for 52 years.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Henry Landmark Jewelers promoted a liquidation sale as they prepare to close after this season. A photo of a sign in the store window made the announcement.

In 2023, Henry's closed its location at 12th and the Boardwalk in Ocean City saying they were downsizing to concentrate on the Cape May store. Henry's closed its 9th Street location on the Ocean City Boardwalk in 2020.

Henry's Landmark Jeweler has been recognized in the industry as one of America's top 50 designer retailers and voted "best jewelry store" locally on several occasions.

No reason has been given as to why the owners have decided to close in Cape May.

Two Friends Started Henry's Landmark Jewelers in 1972

Henry's website tells the story of two friends deciding to open a business on the Ocean City Boardwalk almost on a lark.

It was 1972 when Jeff Sherman and Sam Koper -- friends from Little League (Jeff, centerfield, cleanup; Sam, second base, last) decided to open a store on the Ocean City boardwalk.  Sell cool jewelry, neat clothing, stuff like that. They knew nothing about the business. Yet that didn't stop them from opening another store in the beautiful Victorian town of Cape May on the Washington Street Mall.

 

But the two friends had a plan.  Sell unusual, beautiful, well-made designs at an affordable price, provide outstanding service, seek out friendly and helpful staff, and their little dream shop could eventually earn the confidence of Cape May customers...and hopefully turn a profit.

 

Not the strongest business plan, they both realized -- Shark Tank would send them packing -- but at least they would have a good reason to keep coming back to Cape May each summer, a place they loved.

When they closed the Ocean City location last year, Jeff Sherman talked about the relationship they had developed with their customers over 50 years.

"We've done engagement rings for them. We've done engagement rings for their kids, and we've done engagement rings for their kids," said Sherman. "Since we announced the closing, we've heard an untold amount of really nice comments from people."
