Traffic Stop on Route 42 in Washington Twp., NJ, Leads to Gun, Drug Charges
Washington Township, N.J. — A police officer in Gloucester County who was patrolling Route 42 as part of a "Click It or Ticket" enforcement campaign wound up arresting a man on drug and weapons charges.
The Washington Township Police Department said this past Wednesday afternoon, one of its officers was on Route 42 when he saw a vehicle driving erratically and committing several traffic violations.
After stopping the vehicle, officers learned the driver had a suspended driver's license and multiple outstanding warrants. During their investigation, cops observed suspected narcotics paraphernalia inside of that vehicle.
According to the department, as officers instructed the driver to exit the vehicle, a 9mm shell casing fell from his lap onto the pavement.
From there, with assistance from a K-9 Unit, officers searched the vehicle and found the following:
- A loaded 9mm handgun
- Additional 9mm ammunition
- Suspected oxycodone pills
- Narcotics paraphernalia
As a result, the unidentified driver from Sicklerville was charged with Certain Persons Not to Possess a Weapon, Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance, and Possession of Narcotics Paraphernalia.
The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
