Franklin Township, N.J. — A South Jersey man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the strangulation death of a 41-year-old woman last week.

The Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office says the scene unfolded around 6:15 Thursday morning, June 11th, when 71-year-old Dennis J. Hall of Franklin Township called and reported a 41-year-old woman was not breathing at a home on East Avenue.

According to authorities, Hall admitted to strangling the victim both on the call to emergency services and to officers when they arrived. A witness also told police that Hall had woken them up and admitted to strangling the victim.

Officers attempted lifesaving measures on the woman, who was taken to a local hospital. The next day, she was removed from life support and pronounced dead.

An autopsy performed this past Sunday by the Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland Regional Medical Examiner determined the immediate cause of death was asphyxiation, and the manner of death was homicide.

Hall was arrested at the scene, initially charged with attempted murder, and remanded to the Salem County Jail. Following the victim's death and the autopsy, charges were upgraded to first-degree murder. He remains jailed pending the State's motion for pretrial detention.

Should he be found guilty of first-degree murder, he could potentially spend the rest of his life in prison.

The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
