Have you every wondered about the origin of this popular South Jersey beach destination? Time to go behind the name of Avalon.

According to Wikipedia, Avalon is located on a barrier island in Cape May County, and was an area that was adsorbed from parts of Middle Township back in 1892. The name "Avalon" comes from the legend of King Arthur.

Avalon certainly has some rich history attached to it. Once a forest, Avalon was originally home to Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The area known as Avalon was bought for 79 pounds, or less than $100 back in 1772.

Did you know Avalon's slogan is "Cooler by a Mile"? That's because of all the barrier islands, Avalon extends more into the Atlantic Ocean than most, almost by a full mile! Pretty cool, huh?
