Another heat wave kicks off this weekend, with 90+ degree temperatures and high humidity in the forecast for the Garden State through at least early next week.

The heat is on for New Jersey - again - with the upcoming weekend featuring some of the hottest temperatures we've seen this summer (so far).

Friday morning is starting off fine and fairly comfortable, with mostly sunny skies and prevailing temperatures within a few degrees of 70. But we are going to be cookin' through Friday afternoon, with forecast highs between 90 and 96 degrees. As dew points hover in the upper 60s to around 70, it's going to be a pretty sticky day too - although a slight drop in humidity by the afternoon will likely limit the heat index from entering the truly dangerous zone.

Additionally, an approaching front may fire off a round of stormy weather between 2 p.m. and 2 a.m.. (I realize that's a big time window, but models are not coming into agreement as well as I'd like.) The best chance for thunderstorms for New Jersey will be in the northern third of the state. And yet again, these storms could become quite strong with very heavy rain, potentially damaging wind, and some hail.

Mugginess will abound Friday night through early Saturday morning, as thermometers only dip into the 70s overnight. Following any lingering showers or thunderstorms, skies should clear by daybreak Saturday as a strong area of high pressure builds in.

That high pressure system will carry some very hot air over New Jersey for the weekend, which looks to peak on Saturday. The hot air, beating sunshine, and a brisk westerly wind will push temperatures into the mid to upper 90s for most of the state. Of course, the temperature only tells half of the story, as high humidity will make for some dangerous conditions during the late morning, afternoon, and early evening hours. Heat index values will climb to 100 to 105 degrees for much of the state on Saturday afternoon, with some "feels like" temps as high as 110 degrees. Yup, that's hot!

Even the beaches and boardwalks will be steamy this weekend, potentially in the 90s. The ocean will offer a little relief, but the water is pretty warm right now in the 70s.

There are indications that Sunday will be slightly less humid, and therefore slightly less oppressive and uncomfortable. Highs are still forecast to reach 88 to 94 degrees.

The heat wave continues on Monday, with more widespread 90s expected for the Garden State. We will see some clouds overhead, which could break into showers and thunderstorms around Monday evening.

Minor relief from the heat is expected into Tuesday. But it's not going to do much for us, unfortunately. High temperatures on Tuesday afternoon are still expected to reach the lower 90s for all but North Jersey. Scattered 90s will be possible for Wednesday and Thursday too.

Please take this extended (possibly over a week-long) stretch of heat seriously. Even as you're working on your tan on the beach or in the backyard this weekend, you'll need to stay hydrated and take breaks from the heat, humidity, and relentless sun. An umbrella, fan, air conditioner, body of water, and/or nice cold ice cream will be among your best friends this weekend!
