If you wash your hair every day, especially with harsh shampoo you could actually be making it oilier. A hair stylist once told me that one of the best thing you can do for you hair is wash it less often.

Basically, you are constantly stripping away the natural oils in your hair, or sebum, which forces the glands to produce too much. If you feel need to do something, just use conditioner or dry shampoo on alternate days. In the right amount, the natural oils produced from our scalp actually benefit our hair,  keeping it healthy and smooth. Everyone’s hair is different, so  excessive oil  can be temporary or permanent, but fortunately, we have easy and quick ways to manage and prevent it.

    Wash Less

The best way to break the overproduction of sebum is to skip washing your hair. When it comes to showering everyday, you constantly strip away the oils that help your hair, which forces the glands to produce more. Try and take showers every two days, so that the cycle can get used to it, producing a more moderate amount of sedum. If you are already doing this, try washing every three to four days if possible. Also, make sure you wash your hair early in the morning, because the glands particularly work harder during the night.

    Rinse More

Make sure you are washing your hair properly. You should be rinsing for at least thirty seconds, and after doing so, apply conditioner to the ends of your hair, let it stay for about five minutes, and rinse.

  • 3

    Dry Shampoo

Use dry shampoo for quick oil absorbing during the day. Not only does it instantly suck up the grease, it also aids in volume, and absorbs odors in your hair for the overproduction of sedum. And don’t forget to use clarifying shampoo a couple of times every month to remove all traces of hidden oil clogs and dirt.

    Hands Off

Avoid touching your hair as much as possible. If you brush, move, or style your hair too frequently, it can stimulate sebum-glands to produce more oil.

  • 5

    Be Cool

For washing and rinsing,  use lukewarm or cold water to close your cuticle and reduce damage to your hair. Hot water can do the opposite, and stimulate the glands that produce sebum.

    Hair Powder

Oil-absorbing hair powders can also be a suitable option instead of dry and clarifying shampoo. It can be applied into your hair and provides long-lasting grease absorption.
