It wasn't the items that a Morris County burglar stole that left residents and police scratching their heads — it was what he left behind.

Police say after burglarizing the home on Sept. 1, an apparently remorseful thief left a note telling the homeowners that "the crime had occurred due to duress he was placed under."

According to Morris Township Police, the burglary took place just after midnight, while the family was sleeping. The suspect, who remains at large, entered the James Street residence, just over the Morristown border,  and left with cash, a laptop and a vehicle.

Police are still searching for the alleged suspect. In addition, CrimeStoppers is offering a $1,000 cash award for information that leads to the arrest and indictment of a suspect. CrimeStoppers can be reached at 973-Cop-Call or 1-800-Sheriff.
