Atlantic City, NJ, Cop Jumps Into Chilly Bay to Save Injured Dog
The Atlantic City Police Department says one of their own recently jumped into the bay to save an injured dog.
And we need not remind you that this is October and the water isn't exactly warm.
Call for Help in Venice Park
Officials say the scene unfolded around lunchtime on Wednesday, October 15th, when Ofc. Matt Schmidt responded to a call about a pit bull-type dog that was reportedly abandoned in a vacant lot in the Venice Park section of the city.
At the scene, Schmidt was met by Ofc. Lauren Downey, who noticed that the dog was limping and had a "concerning amount of redness" on his skin.
Animal Control arrived to capture the injured dog, but he was too elusive.
Ofc. Schmidt and Animal Control were then able to corner the pup at a lot near the bay, but he proceeded to jump into the water and swim away from shore.
Ofc. Schmidt Jumps Into Action
Fearing for the animal's safety, Schmidt secured his weapon and uniform with Ofc. Downey then plunged into the cold waters to attempt to rescue the dog.
After several minutes, Ofc. Schmidt utilized a bite pole to secure the dog and he was pulled to shore.
Safe and Sound at the Shelter
Animal Control took possession of the canine and transported him safely to the Atlantic County Animal Shelter, where he was treated for his limp.
As of last week, the dog was listed as being in good health.
