Atlantic City International Airport Has the Cheapest Fares in the Nation
Atlantic City International Airport has been ranked as having the lowest average airfare in the nation since halfway through 2009 and that streak continues.
According to numbers from the Department of Transportation published in an article in The Press of Atlantic City, ACY's average fare was $157. Airports nationwide are around $390.
But are those numbers skewed a little bit? For now, the only airline that operates out of ACY is Spirit Airlines, which offers extremely low airfares (until you tack-on all of the additional fees). The Department of Transportation's survey only looks at the cost of the actual plane ticket.
Regardless, the airport will be seeing more activity soon as United Airlines will be flying from Atlantic City to Houston and Chicago in April and Spirit will restart its flights to Chicago, Detroit, and Atlanta in late spring.
And if you are wondering who's paying the most to hop aboard a plane, Cincinnati, Houston, Washington/Dulles, and Newark were in the top five and at number one is Huntsville, AL -- those folks pay almost $560 on average.
