Atlantic City, NJ Overrides Mayor’s Veto – Stores Will Be Open Later
Atlantic City, New Jersey Mayor Marty Small experienced a rare occurrence, as City Council Overrode his veto.
Some stores in high crime sections of Atlantic City had their hours of operation shortened versus others that could stay open later.
This was done a select basis by city edict and it was patently unfair.
City Council agreed and by a vote of 6 to 3, they overrode Small’s veto.
In a live on-air interview this morning, Friday, July 19, 2024, Atlantic City Councilman George Tibbitt described it as “an unfair process of picking winners and losers,” said Tibbitt.
Tibbitt also explained that store owners were hesitant to report criminal activities to the Atlantic City Police Department … because it negatively impact their rating, and, could result in placing them in what is considered to be a high crime area.
This could result in their store hours of operation being cut. This is something they cannot afford, and it does not allow them to compete fairly with other businesses that are allowed to stay open later into the evening.
The city administrator has cautioned that this does not take affect immediately. He reminded everyone that the state has to approve it. And that this could delay the veto override by up to 20 days.
Tibbitt believes that the state of New Jersey has approved the City Council veto, which will allow all businesses in Atlantic City to compete on a level playing field.
