Atlantic City, N.J. — An Atlantic City man faces a recommended eight-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to aggravated assault and weapons charges.

On Monday, 27-year-old Canei Marshall pleaded guilty to second-degree aggravated assault and second-degree certain persons not to possess firearms.

Prosecutors are recommending an eight-year state prison sentence. Under New Jersey's No Early Release Act, Marshall would have to serve 85% of that sentence before becoming eligible for parole. The sentence would run concurrently with a five-year term on the weapons charge.

ShotSpotter Alert Triggered Police Response on Tennessee Avenue

According to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, on the night of November 26th, 2025, officers with the Atlantic City Police Department responded to the area of 501 N. Tennessee Avenue after a ShotSpotter alert detected two rounds of gunfire.

A short time later, a man identified only as "A.H." arrived at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Division with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his ribcage.

During a follow-up search the next day, investigators recovered a spent Winchester .380-caliber shell casing near Tennessee and Sewell Avenues.

Officials said surveillance footage showed the victim driving to the area of 649 N. New York Avenue. After exiting the vehicle, the victim and a man later identified as Marshall exchanged words.

According to prosecutors, surveillance footage showed the victim driving away and parking on Sewell Avenue while Marshall walked in the same direction. Authorities said Marshall repeatedly looked over his shoulder and appeared to be manipulating an object believed to be a handgun inside a satchel as he approached the vehicle.

Prosecutors said surveillance footage captured a bright flash consistent with muzzle flash from a handgun as Marshall approached the victim's car.

Prosecutors said the timing of the muzzle flash matched the ShotSpotter alert and was consistent with where investigators recovered the spent shell casing.

Surveillance footage then showed the vehicle immediately pulling away while Marshall ran from the area.

Sentencing is scheduled for next month.
