Camden County, NJ, Man Gets 8 Years in Prison for Drug-induced Death of Woman
A Camden County man will be spending the next eight years behind bars for causing the drug-induced death of a woman in 2019.
Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina says 24-year-old Marquese Smith of Camden was sentenced last month after he pleaded guilty in May to one count of first-degree strict liability for drug-induced death.
Authorities say an investigation began in June 2019 when officers from the Maple Shade Police Department responded to an apartment complex where they discovered the body of a 33-year-old woman who had fatally overdosed. The Burlington County Medical Examiner’s Office concluded the cause of death was cocaine and fentanyl toxicity. They were able to determine that the drugs used by the victim had been purchased from Smith, who was charged later that year.
Smith will not become eligible for parole until 85 percent of his term has been served.
