Coast Guard Rescues Injured Boater from Absecon Inlet

The U.S. Coast Guard says they rescued and medevaced an injured boater after his vessel ran aground in Absecon Inlet before sunrise Thursday.

Authorities say just before 3AM, watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay command center received an emergency radio transmission from a mariner who said that he ran aground, hit his head, and his boat was possibly taking on water.

A crew from the USCG station in Atlantic City was dispatched, which found the boat, "high aground and not taking on water."

They brought the mariner aboard a rescue boat, transported him back to the Coast Guard station, and then he was flown to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for treatment.

This event ended well for the rescued boater because he was prepared, says the Coast Guard.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Austin Perkins said in a statement to the press, "We are grateful that this mariner had communications equipment on board in order to reach out for help. You never know when you may need to reach out for assistance, and having a VHF radio on board could end up saving your life."

The condition of the boater that was rescued was not known as of Thursday evening.
