
Former fire company treasurer in Ocean County, NJ, admits stealing $100,000
A former treasurer of a fire company in Ocean County has admitted stealing around $100,000 and now potentially faces several years behind bars.
Salvatore Umek of Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, Pleads Guilty
On Monday, 46-year-old Salvatore Umek of Point Pleasant Beach, the former treasurer for Point Pleasant Beach Fire Company Number 2, pleaded guilty in court and when he is sentenced in September, the State will be seeking a term of five years in state prison along with $107,517 in restitution.
An investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office's Economic Crime Squad along with the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department revealed that between February 2019 and November 2021, Umek, in his capacity as treasurer, unlawfully transferred funds from the fire company's bank account to pay off personal credit card debt of approximately $100,000.
Umek also transferred money directly into his personal bank account and utilized that cash for his own benefit.
On July 12th of last year, Umek surrendered at Point Pleasant Beach Police Headquarters. He was then processed and served with the charge via summons.
