Greenwich Township, N.J. — A child has died after he was reportedly hit by a school bus in Gloucester County on Friday afternoon.

According to WPVI-TV, the incident happened around 3:40 PM near Bennett Street and Aston Drive in Gibbstown.

Police say residents in the area, along with responding officers, provided emergency medical care to the child before being rushed to Cooper University Hospital. He later died from his injuries.

6ABC reported, "Video obtained by Action News shows a woman frantically banging on a neighbor's door, desperate for help in the immediate aftermath. The bus is seen in the background as neighbors attempt to render aid before first responders arrive."

NBC10 published a statement from Holcomb, whose bus was seen at the scene,

The Holcomb organization is deeply concerned about the serious accident involving one of our school buses earlier today. Our thoughts are with everyone affected and we are focused on supporting them in every way we can. We are fully cooperating with all relevant authorities as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident. Safety has always been our highest priority, and we take this event extremely seriously.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.

FOX29, citing the Greenwich Township police chief, said no further information is being released at this time out of respect for the family.

Neighbors described the area as a close-knit community, and the loss has deeply affected those living nearby.

The Greenwich Township School District will have counselors available for students on Monday.
