It was a bridge-and-tunnel couple from New Jersey that got hitched on the spire of the Empire State Building.

Ivan Kuznetsov, 32, and Angelina Nikolau, 33, who were arrested after they climbed the antenna atop the iconic 102-story building, live in East Orange.

As TV helicopters circled the building and Kuznetsov and Nikolau began to make their way down, they stopped on a ledge where Kuznetsov proposed.

They posted photos of their moment and the ring on their shared Instagram. The moment became a global sensation.

Not the first climb

Originally from Russia, the couple was the subject of the 2024 Netflix documentary “Skywalkers: A Love Story” about their “rooftopping” exploits and budding romance.

Daredevils have previously climbed the antenna and other parts of the Empire State Building. Those ascents have largely been unauthorized, but actor and musician Jared Leto was allowed to climb up to the base of the antenna from the 86th floor in 2023 to promote a tour.

Couple now face multiple criminal charges

They are charged with burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, violation of local law, possession of burglar's tools, criminal tampering, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct. They were held overnight at Manhattan Criminal Court and are scheduled for a hearing on Thursday.

It wasn’t clear how the pair gained access to the Empire State Building's antenna, which rises well above public areas of the building. Building management said in a statement that the episode was “unauthorized” and didn’t endanger anyone in the skyscraper.
