Samsung's headquarters move adds hundreds of New Jersey layoffs
Now, the other shoe has dropped —as Samsung announced 739 layoffs out of Englewood Cliffs, effective the end of September.
Around the same time, Mars Wrigley has announced it is closing up its newer U.S. headquarters in Newark — and moving it to join the confectioner and snacking giant’s global headquarters in Chicago.
The Mars Wrigley move means 307 layoffs out of Newark, effective by October.
“Following a comprehensive review of our Mars Snacking North American office footprint, we will be sunsetting the Newark Market Hub for Mars Snacking Associates by December 2027, consistent with our previously communicated move to Chicago,” a company spokesperson said to New Jersey 101.5.
“Mars has a rich history in New Jersey. We remain committed to the state and will continue to invest in our operations, including our ongoing innovation and manufacturing work in Hackettstown,” the company statement also said.
The New Jersey roots of Mars go back to the 1940s — while Wrigley’s Illinois history started in 1891, with founder William Wrigley.
Late July brings more layoff announcements across New Jersey

Verizon Corp Resources Group has announced another 282 layoffs, effective October.
JP Morgan Chase announced another 172 layoffs based out of its Jersey City offices — to bring the financial giant’s collective total this year to 477 layoffs, in four rounds, so far.
Also as of late July, 86 layoffs were announced out of Vineland, by marijuana dispensary, The Cannabist, which is going through bankruptcy proceedings and restructuring.
