Police in Lower Township say a man who was kayaking in Delaware Bay died Sunday afternoon.

According to a press release, officers responded to the Delaware Bay waters off of Birch Avenue in Villas around 1:15 Sunday afternoon after they received a call about a man who fell from a kayak and appeared to be in distress.

Police say before they arrived, civilian bystanders used a kayak and paddled out to assist the distressed kayaker. They were able to pull him on-board and begin CPR while bringing him to shore. Once on-shore, a member of the Lower Township Police Department and a Philadelphia fire fighter continued CPR until rescue personnel took over.

The kayaker was identified as James Jones, who resides in Villas.  He was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center where, despite rescue attempts, he was pronounced dead.
