Ocean County Woman Indicted for 2020 Wine Chiller Murder
An Ocean County woman has been indicted on murder and weapons charges in connection to a May, 2020, death in Brick Township.
49-year-old Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus of Brick was indicted by a Grand Jury on Wednesday, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer.
Authorities say on May 17th, 2020, Brick Township Police were called to a home on Creek Road for a report of an unresponsive female. There, officers found the lifeless body of Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus in an upstairs bedroom.
Cops determined that the two were living together and a, "cylindrical container used for the purpose of chilling wine was utilized in the commission of the murder." The injuries sustained by Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus were consistent with how that item was used in the alleged crime.
On May 18th, 2020, a warrant for the arrest of Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus was issued and three days later she was taken into custody in Houston, TX. She was extradited back to New Jersey and has been held in the Ocean County Jail since.
Billhimer acknowledged the efforts of numerous law enforcement agencies that have been working on this case, including the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Department of Homeland Security, the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the United States Marshals Service, and the Houston Police Department.
