NJ Officials Warn of Electric Bill Credit Scam
Officials in New Jersey say scammers are already going after the $100 electric bill credit that residents will be receiving in the near future.
The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities is alerting those in the Garden State about fraudulent calls impacting customers of PSE&G, Jersey Central Power and Light, Atlantic City Electric, and Rockland Electric Company.
How the Scam Works
The NJBPU has received reports of unsolicited calls from scammers posing as utility company representatives who are asking for personal and financial information so they can sign up customers for the credit.
State officials say that to receive that bill credit, you don't have to do anything. The $100 credit will automatically be applied to all eligible customers.
All 3.9 million residential electric ratepayers in New Jersey are eligible for this credit, which will be distributed in two $50 installments appearing on utility bills in September and October.
The $100 residential universal bill credit is part of a $430 million relief package designed to help New Jersey residents manage high energy costs.
What to Do if Contacted by Scammers
