LAKEWOOD — A Toms River police officer is recovering from an off-duty crash with a truck on the Garden State Parkway.

Officer Brett Hansen, 28, was in his own car on Thursday around Exit 90 and sustained serious life threatening injuries, according to Toms River Police spokesman Ralph Stocco. Hansen was hospitalized and faces numerous expensive surgeries in his recovery.

Hansen joined the Toms River force in August, 2015, as a member of the patrol division.

Donations to help with Hansen's medical costs can be made to the “Brett Hansen Fund” and mailed to Toms River PBA #137, P.O. Box 5011, Toms River NJ 08754.
