What appeared to be a rather routine water rescue on New Year's Eve in Atlantic City was anything but when a first responder was allegedly almost stabbed by a man who was apparently suffering a psychiatric episode.

First Responders Called to Man in Distress Near Jetty

The scene unfolded around 12:30 Tuesday afternoon when the Atlantic City Fire and Police Departments were called to the water at Rhode Island Avenue for a report of a man in distress near a jetty.

At the scene, officers located the man, later identified as 31-year-old Christopher Treadway of Mays Landing, who appeared to be conscious but not actively swimming.

Firefighter Enters Water, Rescue Turns Violent

The Atlantic City Fire Department says Firefighter Dominic Gitto entered the water to reach Treadway, and during the rescue, he resisted and attempted to stab Gitto with a screwdriver. Gitto deflected the weapon and continued rescue efforts despite the man's reported aggressive and erratic behavior.

ACFD personnel ultimately formed a human chain and pulled Treadway into shallow water, where he again became combative, according to officials.

With assistance from the Atlantic City Police Department, he was eventually taken into custody for a psychiatric evaluation. He has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, resisting arrest, and obstruction.

Firefighter Treated for Hypothermia

Authorities said during the rescue operation, Gitto's dry suit began taking on water, exposing him to the cold ocean water, which was in the low 40s. After exiting the water, he started experiencing symptoms of acute hypothermia. He was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

Chief Speaks

In a press release, Atlantic City Fire Chief Scott Evans said Gitto was sworn into the department just a few months ago and his actions "demonstrated courage, professionalism, and personal sacrifice."

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Atlantic City Police Department at (609) 347-5766.

The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
