If you’ve noticed an increase in local fireworks, that is because Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware have all relaxed their consumer fireworks laws over the past few years.

So what sparked that decision?  Tax revenue.  The tax money raised for fireworks nationally is just about a billion dollars - that is a lot of sparklers.  However, every year, people get injured because of home fireworks displays. It is probably best to leave fireworks to the professionals, but if you do decide to light up your own backyard, here are a few tips.

DON’T SET OFF FIREWORKS AT HOME

If you have a dud, douse in water before picking it up. It’s possible the flame in one isn’t completely out yet which could lead to a fire - not the type of sparks you want on the holiday.

    KEEP YOUR KIDS AWAY

This should go without saying, but every year, kids get injured by fireworks. Allowing your kids to play with fireworks is a recipe for disaster. Take them to the side and don’t let them touch the fireworks. We all know, in the excitement of the evening, kids can wander. In addition, many parents think sparklers are safe, but they can get up to 1,000 degrees, so do not give them to kids.

IF USING FIREWORKS, USE YOUR HEAD

This is a no-brainer, but be smart when using fireworks. Don’t point them at people and stand back when they are set off. A close distance to sparking fireworks can mean trouble.

    BUY LEGAL FIREWORKS

If you are buying fireworks, buy the ones that are legal for New Jersey. Legal fireworks are safer and have labels for instruction. Fireworks that are illegal could be hazardous.
