Both Atlantic City H.S. Basketball Teams Shutting Down for Season
The Atlantic City High School boys and girls basketball teams have decided to end their seasons due to COVID-19 concerns.
In a memo sent out Wednesday by the school's athletic director, Chris Ford, Jr., the district announced that in order to ensure the best health, safety, and well-being of the student-athletes, they have decided to shut down both programs.
The memo states that with only a few days remaining in the season, there is too great a risk of injury to make a return worthwhile after sitting out for 14 days.
The decision was made by Atlantic City Superintendent Barry Caldwell, boys' coach Gene Allen, girls' coach Jason Lantz, athletic trainer John Ross, and the school physician Dr. Brian Sokalsky.
Both teams have been sitting out in quarantine due to COVID-19 concerns. The boys' haven't played since Feb. 10 and the girls have been on the sidelines since Feb. 17.
The Vikings boys (6-1) were one of the top teams in the area at the time of the shutdown, and we're set to play some key games in the near future. They missed an upcoming scheduled game with Ocean City, the lone team to defeat them this season.
