Former Atlantic City Council President Pleads Guilty to Voter Fraud
We reported first back on January 23, 2025 that it was likely that Craig Callaway would plead guilty to voter fraud charges, daring back to the General Election of 2022.
Callaway made it official yesterday, February 13, 2024, in United States District Court before federal Judge Marie Bumb.
Callaway has pled guilty to:
- procuring
- casting
- tabulating fake vote-by-mail ballots in the November, 2022 General Election.
The charges are related to vote-by-mail ballots that were allegedly cast by Team Callaway on behalf of voters … who told federal investigators that they never authorized their ballots to be cast on their behalf in this manner.
Acting U.S. Attorney Vikas Khanna for New Jersey said the following about Callaway:
"The defendant admitted to depriving New Jersey residents of a fair election by participating in a scheme to cast ballots for voters who did not vote in the election. Along with our law enforcement partners, we are committed to prosecuting those who criminally seek to undermine impartially conducted elections,” said Khanna.
Callaway will be sentenced on June 17, 2025 and can face up to 5 years in federal prison.
Callaway has cooperated with the federal government during the federal investigation, which typically earns a deferent consideration at sentencing.
A well placed source has told us that Callaway apparently has not turned any others over to the federal government and is prepared to take the full weight of the consequences.
Callaway told me about 15 years ago in an interview-air interview that "I'm never going back to jail."
Callaway already knows what it is like to forfeit his freedom, when In 2008, Callaway accepted responsibility for taking bribes and participating in a scheme to blackmail former Atlantic City Councilman Gene Robinson.
Callaway spent 3 years in prison and was released in 2010.
The federal government has a very high conviction rate, well into the 90 percentile for those defendants who decide to go to trial against them.
Callaway opted to not roll the dice, and, instead will accept a plea deal that will see him face the next 1 to 5 years of his life in a federal prison cell, halfway house or home confinement.
