Labor Day Weekend Marks End Of Summer Season At Jersey Shore For Most

It was 104 days ago that I greeted the unofficial start to summer on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend.  In some ways that feels like a really long time ago but in many others it was just yesterday.  As you discover as you get older time moves at an incredible pace and while you may want it to slow down…it just doesn’t work that way.  This is especially true when it comes to summer at the Jersey Shore as Labor Day weekend is pretty much the end for many things in beach towns and communities. (I’ll address local summer later).

In some ways the feelings of summer ending have already taken place.  Not only have many schools already welcomed back students but most high school football teams are already playing their second game of the season.  The quirk in the calendar this year makes it really feel like last week was the summer swan song and it will be interesting to see what traffic and business will be like over the holiday weekend for those that rely on tourism.

While not as drastic as when I was a kid growing up in Seaside Heights there will be a notable difference on Tuesday when the non-summer lifestyle really begins to settle in.  Beaches will likely be free but in most cases you won’t have lifeguards to protect swimmers and as we know that’s when most drownings occur at the shore.  A word of caution for those who will still venture into the ocean.

Also a reminder for those who love summer.  It’s only 266 days until the start of Memorial Day weekend.
