Gloucester City Police Charge Teen in Car Theft Case
Gloucester City, N.J. — A South Jersey teenager is facing charges after he allegedly tried to steal a vehicle late last week.
The Gloucester City Police Department says at about 11:00 last Friday, its officers were dispatched to the 100 block of North King Street for a report of an attempted motor vehicle theft.
At the scene, officers met with the victim who said that while inside a nearby building, his vehicle's anti-theft alarm was activated. When he went outside, he saw the rear driver's-side window had been smashed, and an unknown male was sitting in the driver's seat. The victim confronted the suspect, who fled on foot.
Detectives identified the suspect as a 16-year-old man from Gloucester City. They said they were also able to determine that the same juvenile was involved in multiple motor vehicle thefts within Gloucester City about two weeks earlier.
That unidentified teen was charged with third-degree attempted theft of a motor vehicle and third-degree burglary. The complaint was placed on a summons according to state guidelines.
The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
