Large Emergency Drill Planned at Atlantic City International Airport Saturday
You may see an increase in emergency vehicles — and even smoke — at or around Atlantic City International Airport this weekend, but authorities are telling area residents not to be alarmed.
That's because it's all in the name of safety.
Atlantic City International Airport (ACY) will conduct a full-scale emergency preparedness exercise this Saturday, May 17th, from 7 AM to 1 PM to test and strengthen response plans, communications, and how various agencies interact.
ACY Airport Fast Facts
- ACY served over one million passengers in 2024
- ACY covers 5,000 acres, which is the equivalent of over 3,700 football fields
- The airport is in 3 different municipalities: Galloway, Hamilton, and Egg Harbor Townships
- Since 1958, the airport has been home to the Atlantic City Air National Guard Base and the 177th Fighter Wing
FAA-Mandated Safety Drill Every Three Years
Officials with ACY say this exercise, which is held every three years per Federal Aviation Administration regulations, "is designed to evaluate emergency response procedures in the event of a large-scale aircraft incident."
This drill will involve coordination among airport personnel and multiple federal, state, county, and local agencies.
What You May See or Experience
Those flying in and out of ACY have nothing to worry about as the airport will remain fully operational during the exercise.
Motorists and residents may notice increased emergency vehicle activity, especially along Tilton Road and near the NAFEC/airport circle.
Don't be alarmed by the presence of sirens or simulated smoke, which may be visible during the drill.
Airport Director Emphasizes Importance of Preparedness
Tim Kroll, ACY Airport Director, said in a statement, "This exercise is critical to ensuring our preparedness in the unlikely event of a major emergency. We appreciate the community’s cooperation and understanding as we carry out this important safety initiative."
