Spirit Airlines Shuts Down Operations Immediately, Atlantic City Airport Issues Statement
After decades of low-cost air travel, Spirit Airlines is no more.
A simple message on their website says, "It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately."
According to CNBC, a Spirit flight from Detroit to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport was its last to touch down shortly after midnight local time.
Statement from ACY
Closer to home, Atlantic City International Airport posted the following message on its Facebook early Saturday morning:
Spirit Airlines has ceased operations at Atlantic City International Airport (ACY). We understand this may be unexpected and stressful for many travelers.
Passengers with Spirit Airlines reservations are advised not to come to the airport, as there will be no Spirit representatives to assist with booking, rebooking or customer service inquiries.
17,000 Out of Work
Spirit ceased operations after failing to secure an agreement with bondholders on an 11th-hour bailout from the Trump administration. As a result, about 17,000 employees have lost their jobs.
