A Walk on the Ocean City, NJ, Boardwalk the Day After Memorial Day Weekend
Ocean City, N.J. — You don't need me to tell you that the weather wasn't exactly ideal over Memorial Day Weekend down the shore.
It was, simply put, pretty awful.
However, the weather the day after Memorial Day was quite nice in Ocean City, and it was a good occasion to take a walk on the boardwalk to see how things were now that we're into the summer tourist season.
Join me for a quick walk and some observations along the way...
First, crews spent the past several weeks installing new boards along big sections of the boardwalk, and it looks fantastic. And it's pretty cool to smell the freshly-cut lumber as you're walking. New light poles are being installed on the northern end, too.
Yes, this is another summer with Wonderland sitting quietly and still. I had to stop and think about how all of those cars on the big wheel haven't moved in a long time, besides swaying in the wind.
One of the big doors at Wonderland looked like it was stuck, allowing you to look inside to see all of the arcade games. It was like they were in prison.
A few surfers were out in the water. The ocean was about 57 degrees with 3-foot waves.
There wasn't much of a crowd at all. Nice and quiet. It's always enjoyable to hear the crashing waves as you walk on the boards.
Not much of a line at Prep's, or any pizza place, really.
Pro tip: I'm not saying this particular restaurant does this, but if you walk by a pizza place that is closing and they still have pizza that they need to sell, sometimes you can get a few slices really cheap. I've made out like a bandit quite a few times.
There were some really cool clouds Tuesday evening, some that were rather circular, almost framing the big wheel at Wonderland.
And, for the record, I did walk the entire length of the boardwalk. It is signed as 2 1/2-miles long, but in reality, it's 2.45 miles, for those keeping track.
The good news is that the weather should be improving, and a really nice weekend is coming up with sunny skies and high temperatures in the 70 to 75-degree range.
