Authorities in Cape May County are warning people of a recent fraudulent check scan in the area.

The Cape May County Prosecutor's Office says over the past few weeks, detectives from several law enforcement agencies have received complaints of fraudulent checks attempting to be cashed from legitimate business accounts.

According to a press release, multiple vendors have received fraudulent checks from unknown individuals in an attempt to purchase items they are selling. These checks are written for a sum larger than the amount requested for the item and tend to be written from a large business or municipal accounts.

Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland would like to warn the public to practice extreme caution when conducting all business transactions. He would also suggest businesses in the area routinely check their operating accounts for any transactions which appear to be fraudulent.

Anyone who may have been the victim of this scam is urged to call Sutherland's office at (609) 465-1135.
