South Jersey Man Facing Child Porn Charges
A South Jersey man is facing child porn-related charges.
The Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office says last Wednesday, August 27th, 44-year-old Michael S. Schmitt of Williamstown was arrested at his home. He is facing the following charges:
- Second-degree distribution of child sexual abuse material (CSAM)
- Third-degree possession of CSAM
Investigation Details
Officials say an investigation began with a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that someone was distributing child porn over a social media platform.
On July 17, 2025, detectives from the High Tech Crimes Unit of the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office executed a search warrant at Schmitt's Williamstown residence. Several electronic devices allegedly belonging to Schmitt were seized at that time. A subsequent search of the seized devices revealed CSAM files on the devices, as well as evidence that the devices had been used to access a social media account related to original Cyber Tip.
Potential Penalties if Convicted
If convicted, Schmitt faces up to ten years in prison and a $150,000 fine on the second-degree charge and up to five years and a $15,000 fine on the third-degree offense.
Schmitt was lodged in the Salem County Correctional Facility pending a detention hearing.
The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
