If you've ever wondered why the park in Egg Harbor Township is named Childs Kirk Memorial Park, this is why.

Back in late September of 1975, 4 young Egg Harbor Township boys were killed in a traffic accident that tore at the hearts of the local community.

The four were on their way to school in Mays Landing when they lost their lives in the tragic accident. The four were on their way to Absegami High School. (This was before there was an Egg Harbor Township High School.)

According to Asbury Park Press Archives, a car driven by Ronald Kirk, 17, was traveling at a high rate of speed when it crashed head on to a car driven by Margaret Madsen, 50, of Linwood. The crash occurred on Tilton Road near a traffic circle.

According to the Press, Kirk was killed, as were his passenger - 3 brothers: James Childs, 18, Michael Childs, 16, and Kenneth, 14. The article states that all four boys were killed, while Madsen was in serious condition following the crash.

The paper notes that all four were members of the football team at the school.
