The latest list of drugstore closings includes an Atlantic County location of Walgreens.

The Walgreens store at 855 North Main Street in Pleasantville will close permanently on Monday, June 23rd, according to information released by the company on Thursday.

The Pleasantville store is one of two South Jersey stores slated for closure, with the other being the Walgreens in Cherry Hill.

But this is just the beginning, as Walgreens announced in October, it plans to close 1,200 stores over the next three years.

The company said decreasing sales and changes in the pharmacy industry have made it difficult to cover costs.

Walgreens said in a statement...

"It is never an easy decision to close a store, and we know how important they are to the communities we serve and therefore do everything possible to improve their performance. When closures are necessary, we will work in partnership with community stakeholders to minimize customer disruptions."

What to Do If You Get Your Prescriptions At Pleasantville Walgreens

If the Pleasantville Walgreens is your drugstore, Walgreens said customers will be notified by mail, and their prescriptions will be transferred to the nearest store or one of your choice.

It looks like the Northfield Walgreens at 1315 New Road is the closest store, about two miles away.

The Pleasantville CVS is just down the street and and Sam's Club is also an option.

Are All Drugstores Going Away?

So, Walgreens plans to close 1,200 stores and says the business just isn't that profitable.

Rite Aid's troubles have been well publicized lately. At its peak, Rite Aid operated more than 4,500 locations nationally.

Now, Rite Aid has 1,240 stores across 15 states, down from 2,300 stores just two years ago, and they have plans to close 100 more stores this year.

Meanwhile, CVS Pharmacy plans to close 270 stores this year, after closing 900 stores over the last two years, but also opening 100 stores in more profitable locations.

Will we get all our prescriptions by delivery ten years from now?

My friendly little mom and pop pharmacy, Bunting Family Pharmacy in Northfield, still seems to be doing a good business.
